What is a 24h theatre challenge?
Multiple teams are given prompts to inspire them, and have 24 hours to write and rehearse a very short one act play. These plays will be presented in a final showcase at the end of the twenty-four hour window. The winning team will be decided by audience choice vote, and given prizes provided by our lovely sponsors. Thank you sponsors we love you 😘
But the festival is longer than 24h, how does that work?
You have 24 total hours of studio time to devise your show between Thursday, Friday and Saturday *October 8th to 11th. You’re welcome to use less than 24h in the studio, and you can keep working on the play outside of studio time.
How do the teams work?
Each team will be made up of 4+ people. You can sign up as a team, or as an individual and we will put you on a team. If you want to join together with someone(s) but there aren’t enough of you to make up a team (less than 4) you can mention the other people you are applying with in the notes of your application and we will do our best to keep you together.
I love writing but I don’t want to act, can I still join?
Yes you can! As long as each team has enough people to fulfill the roles of actors, directors, writers, etc. then you can contribute as just a writer. When making teams we will take all applicants’ role preferences into account to make balanced groups where people can do what they want (if applying as a full team finding that balance is up to you.)
How do the prompts work?
The challenge will be launched at 6pm on Thursday October 8th. At launch time, all the teams will receive their prompts. These are meant to give you a starting point to create from but feel free to interpret them as creatively as you want.
What if I can’t be there on Thursday or at any point during the rehearsal period?
No worries! The details revealed at the Thursday launch will also be emailed to all participants afterwards. Additionally, it is up to you to decide how much of the rehearsal time your team wants to use, you are not required to be on site during the full 24h.
Where can I rehearse?
The Atelier in Arts Court will be available on Thursday from launch at 6:00pm until 12am, on Friday from 5pm to 12am and on Saturday from 9:30am to 5:30pm. A LabO studio will also be available 8am to 7pm on Saturday. You can also work in other public spaces in the Arts Court/Art Gallery.
What if I need help?
There will be roaming mentors available for the duration of the rehearsal period. They will be able to guide you, answer any questions you have and offer an outside eye.
